COP 17 is happening in Durban, South Africa, “with a call to world leaders to save tomorrow today”.   The meeting aims to discuss climate change. These changes are predominantly occurring due to global warming caused by greenhouse gases.
In the last two COP conferences, in Copenhagen (COP 15) and Cancun(COP 16), there has not been a global agreement to reduce emission of greenhouse gases. This COP intends to regulate the emissions of harmful gases to the environment. In 2012, the agreement known as the Kyoto Protocol will end, and it is tremendously important to have a new agreement to regulate emissions and help curb climate change.

Another critical issue is the participation of developing countries to control pollution in the atmosphere. In the past, these countries refused to reduce their emissions because they wanted to continue to use energy from fossil fuels (coal and oil) to boost their economies.

Recent disasters may force these countries to reconsider their positions.

Disasters caused by climate change have become more frequent and with larger impact. Countries must reach an agreement soon to make decisions that help to prevent further disasters. In Brazil, South Africa, Thailand and many other places, the floods caused by torrential rains have left people homeless, jobless, without their way of life.
