Earth Day 22 april 2019
The theme of Earth Day 2019 is Protect Our Species. We need to be aware of species threatened by global warming and climate change. The Earth Day Network listed 10 species that are threatened and need our help. Look how important they are:
1. BEES AND INSECTS
Bees and insects have greatly diminished. They are pollinators and without them the plants do not bloom and fructify.
2. BIRDS
There are less 40% of birds than in previous times. They are the ones that disperse the seeds of plants and trees.
3. CORAL REEF
It is one of the species that suffer most from climate change and 65% are threatened. They are food for other marine species.
4. ELEPHANTS
They play a key role in fertilizing the savannas and preparing the ground for smaller species.
5. FISH AND CRUSTACEANS
They recycle nutrients from water and are vital to maintaining the base of the marine ecosystem. They are a source of food for humans and other marine animals.
6. GIRAFFES
They also decreased by 40%. Like elephants, they spread seeds through
7. BIG MONKEYS
Gorillas, chipanzos, orangutans and bonobos have had a lot of impact in recent years. They are also sowers that help maintain vegetation in the area where they live. Without them, the trees do not grow.
8. MARINE TURTLES
Turtles have also suffered a dramatic loss in the last century. Many projects try to recover this damage. They help recycle nutrients in oceans and beaches.
9. SHARKS
Some species of sharks have already dropped by 90%! They balance the marine environment by feeding on medium-sized species that in turn feed on smaller ones. Without the sharks there could be a collapse of the food chain.
10. WHALES
These immense animals have declined in number and are our allies to limit global warming. Their excrement serves as food for phytoplankton that captures carbon from the atmosphere.
