Earth Day 2016 will be a remarkable one! On April 22, all world leaders have been invited by United Nations Secretary Ban Ki -moon to sign the Agreement that was reached in Paris on December 12 2015. The ceremony will take place at UN Headquarters in New York. The Agreement was adopted by all 196 Parties of the United Framework Convention on Climate Change at COP 21.

In the agreement, all countries agreed to work to limit global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius to stop climate change.  The signing ceremony takes place on the first day that the Agreement will be open for signatures, marking the first step toward ensuring that the Agreement enters into legal force as quickly as possible.

The representatives of two most powerful economies in the world Unites States and China will be at this historic moment. The two countries account  for more than 40 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

President Obama and Xi Jiping issued a joint statement and Obama said:

“Our cooperation and our joint statements were critical in arriving at the Paris agreement, and our two countries have agreed that we will not only sign the agreement on the first day possible, but we’re committing to formally join it as soon as possible this year”.

Since 1970, by the initiative of John McConnell, Earth Day has been celebrated all over the world with acts to protect the Earth’s ecosystems. In 2009, the United Nations Assembly recognized that Mother Earth is a common for the planet earth in a number of countries and regions, and noting that Earth Day is observed each year in many countries, decided to designate 22 April as International Mother Earth Day in 2009.
