Instead of plastic or polystyrene, mushrooms!
We know that both plastic and polystyrene are materials that have an enviromental impact. A new solution exists with dare materials made from by-products of agriculture and mushroom fibers or mycelium. The mycelium is a natural glue, self-assembling that works well to absorb the waste and produce waste materials that do not cause harm to the environment.
It is a material that can be grown on any substrate, including waste and totally biodegradable. Just let it grow in a cavity filled with materials like straw. It can be molded into any shape and makes any type of packaging.
Mycelium was adapted for industrial use by a small company in the town of Green Island in the state of New York. The Ecovative Design was founded by two young people after graduation. According to the founder, “it is the world’s leader in applying mycelium technology in the manufacturing of structural materials … Our solutions are bioadaptive, drawing from the Earth’s full toolkit renewable resources.”
