What is “fracking”?
“Fracking” “fraccing” or “fracing” is a technique used to release natural gas or other substances for extraction and economic use.
Hydraulic fracturing “is the propagation of fractures in a rock layer by a pressurized fluid. Some hydraulic fractures form naturally and can create conduits with oil or gas that come from reservoir’s rocks.
To fragmet the rock they use tubes containing water and chemicals to put pressure on the rock until it breaks. It’s like a mini earthquake. A suficiente quantity of sand is to used to keep the channel open allowing gas to come up.
The fracturing may cause serious environmental impacts to the detriment of human health through contamination of underground water, damage to air quality and migration of gases and chemicals to the surface. In Europe fracking is banned in some countries and in U.S. there is an intense debate surrounding the fracking for the damage already caused. The biggest problem is that fracking is coming to Brazil!
