Ecological Sunday on Venice’s Grand Canal
Last Sunday there was no motorboat on Grand Canal in Venice. Only gondolas and gondoliers. A silent welcome.
The city which is one of the beautiful places in the world has its future threatened with polution. Motor boats ban was to try to reverse this situation. The excessive volume of traffic is contributing for the city’s deterioration.
The reason for the ban is to call attention to the need for sustainable forms of transport in the famous canals of Venice. Several boats no polluting and battery-powered boats were on display during the ban that lasted from 10 am to 15 o’clock.
The representative of Italia Nostra that works to preserve the city’s heritage, said: “We hope that with the ban Venetians become more how as charming the town could be, if we insist on boats with only electric power.
Conservationists say the two-stroke marine engines are a particular problem in terms of volume of smoke and smell emitted.
It is believed that the acid content of pollution is accelerating the erosion of the medieval buildings of the city, already sinking into the lagoon – a process exacerbated by constant currents caused by the large number of ships passing through the main channels.
