In a nutshell: it is the development that meets today’s needs without preventing people to satisfy their needs in the future.

The original definition appeared in Brutland report Our Common Future: “Sustainable development is what meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generationssatisfazerm their own needs.”

And what are these needs? The needs are great and every day, we may findwe need more things to live. The basic necessities of life are food, clothing and shelter. The means of transport and communication are also important elements in today’s world.

If we want the future will not lack food, clothing or materials to build our homes, schools and everything else we need, we have to think about controlling whatwe take from nature and not waste anything. That’s why recycling has to be partof our day to day.

That’s the idea of sustainable development: a development that happens in present  and that ”sustains”  itself  in the future.
