COP 22 – Marrakesh
The United Nations Conference on Climate Change has started yesterday 7/11 in Marrakesh, Morocco.
The Paris Accord was ratified by 100 countries. This means all signataries countries have agreed to assert what is written. The aim of the agreement is that the world economy can develop within the concept of sustainability, without emitting gas harmful to the environment.
At the Marrakesh meeting the 5 key points under discussion are:
1. Increase carbon emissions cuts. To increase the temperature does not exceed 1.5o C you must act to cut more emissions.
2. Finalize the set of rules established to implement the Paris Agreement by 2018. The rules include:
How countries can account for their emissions.
How will you agree to evaluate the adequacy of your goals in 2018 and beyond.
How countries will account for their finances by moving ahead on goals.
3. A set of decisions and commitments to ensure that poor and vulnerable countries get support to implement their own plans and deal with the impacts of climate change.
4. Continue on the road to accomplish long-term transformation plans by 2050 to reduce emissions, build resilience and transfer finance. These plans signal to the public and to companies and financiers that the phasing out of fossil fuels is ongoing and that the billions invested in coal, oil and gas will shift to renewable energy to achieve a zero carbon energy system.
5. Review of the agreement made in Warsaw 3 years ago regarding Loss & Damage. Formulate a work plan for the next five years with practical solutions for those already suffering losses and damages due to the impacts of climate change.
