The Olympics Legacy in Rio de Janeiro
The opening ceremony of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was marked by concern for Earth biodiversity.
To reduce the environmental impact of the event, each athlete received a seed of a native tree of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. There were 208 species of seeds, one for each participating country of the games and for the refugees’ delegation. In each delegation, a child carrying a change of more mature plant.
The seeds were planted in metal towers. At the closing ceremony, the towers became the symbol of the Olympics, in the form of five green rimmed plants representing the five continents.
Seedlings should be planted after a year in the Radical park in Rio to form the Forest of Athletes. The environmental legacy of the Olympics brings a clear message that all the world should be involved in preserving the planet’s biodiversity.
