A Tree called Methuselah

According to the Bible,  Methuselah was Noah’s grandfather and lived 930 years! Having lived so long his name was given to one of the oldest trees of our planet. It is 4,800 years old.

Methuselah Tree is a type of pine tree that grows in the upper part of western North America and has survived to every kind of challenge during the ages: extreme cold, lightning and increased solar radiation.

Now, Methuselah and the other ancient pines in this region are threatened.  Two problems have come at once: a plague type rust and beetles increasing due to rising temperatures.

Scientists warn that this type of pest is difficult to fight, but the biggest challenge is the rise in temperatures that alter ecosystems. The trees are growing very fast and this happens due to high temperatures in the region. The rapid growth affects the resistance of pine trees and they will possibly live less. And even disappear!

The changes of global warming are profound. Understanding them is the first step to achieve the balance of our ecosystems.
